Staying Safe on Your Motorcycle

Published on March 28th, 2019

May is National Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month, but we’ve decided to get a head start on ways to keep you protected with the breeze on your back. The sunshine and high temperatures bring different modes of transportation back on the road. Motorcycle riders are ready to come out of winter hibernation, but it is important to refresh all safety tips and be vigilant (riders and car drivers alike) as motorcyclists begin to ride again.

Motorcycle Maintenance

Living in Illinois means driving your motorcycle is seasonal. When it comes to getting back on the bike, it is important to have a full machine maintenance check first. Oil, brakes, and air filter; these are just a few of the tasks to check off your list to make sure your machine is running properly. If you don’t know where to start, always refer back to your motorcycle manual. Keeping your bike in the best condition allows for a safer ride.

Dress Appropriately

Whether it’s day or night, you should always wear the correct attire while riding your motorcycle. First and foremost: always, always wear a helmet. You should wear a full-face helmet, regardless of the lack of Illinois law enforcing you to do so. Other rules to follow: — Wear bright colors—you can even invest in a safety vest. — Every turn you make deserves a turn signal. Make sure you put on your blinker in advance. — Flash your brakes when coming to a stop. — Keep a safe distance between your bike and other vehicles. — Avoid other vehicles’ blind spots.

Be Constantly Aware

Whether you are in your driveway or on a busy highway, be hyper-vigilant on your motorcycle. Once you put that helmet on, you should be aware of your surroundings. It is important to keep pedestrians, drivers, and riders safe. There is no harm going to a motorcycle refreshing course (whether you’re a newbie or long-time rider).
